Medical curriculum

The Department of Epidemiology is responsible for training medical students at the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam the basic principles of epidemiology.

In the first year of the medical curriculum we provide a one-week Introduction to Medical Research (Theme 1.A).
In the second year, basic medical statistics relevant to interpreting research findings is taught.
In the third year an elective 10-week Minor is offered on Medical Research in which Epidemiology plays a major role.

Another elective 10-week Minor is offered in the third year by the Clinical Epidemiology group on Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine. In the fourth year both clinical epidemiology and population epidemiology are covered in a 5-week period including lectures, practica, and self-study (Theme 4.3).

During the same period medical statistics is taught. In the second part of the fourth year we contribute to a general theme on “The Patient”.

During the clerkships (co-assistentschappen) weekly lectures are given by the Clinical Epidemiology group to students rotating through the Dept of Radiology.

Master of Science programs
The Department of Epidemiology is one of the participating departments in the research school NIHES (Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences). Many courses are offered by the staff of the department which together make a substantial contribution to the Master of Science programs of the NIHES. In particular, the Master of Science programs in Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, and Genetic Epidemiology fall under the responsibility of the department. These programs are mandatory during the first year of a PhD program. See www.nihes.nl for further information on the Master of Science programs
Post-graduate programs

Our staff members are regularly invited to present review lectures at a wide variety of post-graduate courses, conferences, and symposia.
